“Skarb” and “Freedom Diaries” in Bulgaria and Romania: How Ukrainian Schools Abroad Help Children Stay Connected to Ukraine

21.05.2026

The Hrystia Hranovska Foundation’s educational projects, Skarb and Freedom Diaries, continue to expand their international presence. In May, the Freedom Diaries team visited Varna, where the Foundation’s projects were presented to the educational community at the Ukrainian learning center Radiance.

The event brought together teachers from the Radiance school, representatives of Ukrainian educational organizations across Bulgaria, and educators from Romania, who joined online from Bucharest, Brașov, Constanța, and Cluj-Napoca.

Mariia Proshkovska, Creative Director of Freedom Diaries, and the project’s Producer, Alina Kochemasova, went beyond presenting the project’s methodology. Instead, they focused on its core mission: helping children maintain a meaningful connection with their home through creativity, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging, even while living far from Ukraine.

Halyna Samchuk, Director of the Hrystia Hranovska Foundation, joined the event remotely to present the mission and educational opportunities offered by Skarb. She spoke about the project’s educational value, its innovative interactive learning formats, and the importance of helping Ukrainian children remain connected to the history, culture, and traditions of their homeland, no matter where they are.

The event was further distinguished by a message of support from Olesia Ilashchuk, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Bulgaria. Ambassador Ilashchuk emphasized that cooperation and the exchange of experience among Ukrainian educational organizations abroad are essential to strengthening Ukrainian unity around the world.

The Foundation also extends its sincere gratitude to Liudmyla Demianova, Director of the Radiance school, for the warm welcome and for creating a space where Ukrainian children can learn, grow, and preserve their cultural identity.

We are grateful to everyone who joined the event, both in person and online, and we look forward to future meetings and new collaborative initiatives.
